In a few short days I'll be heading into an unknown world. I will be leaving a job I've grown to enjoy immensely and start my trek to Spring Mountain for our hike on the Appalachian Trail.
I should bounce back to about 5 years ago when we moved to State College Pennsylvania. My husband and I moved here with our two youngest children, Danielle and Emma. We were starting our new lives after retiring from the United States Coast Guard. I started working at Penn State University. While I was enjoying our journey thus far, something happened, and I came across a man who was journaling his entire trip on the Appalachian Trail. I was intrigued to say the least. I went home with so much excitement and told my husband wouldn't it be AMAZING to take this journey and be free to hike all day and enjoy the wilderness. Let's just say my husband's comments were not as exciting as mine. One of his comments were do you know how far that is, and my reply why yes, I do. He let it rest, while I kept dreaming. I would bring it up from time to time, but with no real idea we would ever do this.
A few years went by and right before COVID came around we were seriously talking about hiking this together. So many things to do if we choose to do this, logistics, our children, our life. How could we make it all happen IF we did this most amazing hike.
I did join so many groups and soaked in all of the information anyone was willing to share. I was even trying to follow a few hikers who were hiking during COVID and thought that would be amazing being oblivious to the world we all were living in.
We have managed in the last two years, to slowly get our gear together. Changed our minds and resupply. Weve gone from wanting to ship boxes full of stuff to supply areas to going and resupplying in towns to having only a few boxes shipped for personal items.
Logistics have been a bit crazy to get down to a science but in the end, we've done it. We've played Rock, Paper, Scissor to decide the toughest of decisions.
In the end we are heading out on March 7th via Train to get to Georgia. We will carry our packs with all that we need to get through at least a few days on the trail.
Stay tuned for an adventure I'm sure will be exhausting and exhilarating all in the same moment.
Our journey we share with you will be our own and will be amazing to experience and we hope you get to enjoy it as much as we are.
Happy Trails
Carey and Steven
